Shuttle pick-up key:
1. Punxsy Plaza
2. McDonald’s downtown
3. Groundhog Plaza / County Market, near Burger King & KFC/Long John’s
4. Wal-Mart Plaza
Groundhog.org’s map and their written instructions do not jibe. The map lists several more locations that are described. Assume these four locations are the only ones where you can expect a shuttle bus to appear.
Wait times are long. Please plan to be in line for a bus between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m.
The event itself is over usually a bit after 7:20 a.m. Busing to and from the Knob usually continues non-stop from 3 a.m. until 10 a.m. If you must leave the Knob for any reasons, busing back down into town is available.
Punxsutawney is a fairly straight-forward town, existing at the crossroads of US 119 and PA 36. However, the Groundhog Day ceremony takes place just out of town at a place known as Gobbler’s Knob.
You are not allowed to drive to Gobbler’s Knob on Groundhog Eve or Groundhog Day.
Busing to and from Gobbler’s Knob is available starting late at night on February 1 and continuing right up to the event time after 7 a.m.
You may also walk to Gobbler’s Knob, although it is not encouraged, especially if you have children or a person with medical needs with you. The walk will exceed several miles from downtown, over hilly and wooded terrain.
In other words, if you’re young and dumb, walk. Otherwise, take one of the many buses. Especially if it is a colder year.
There are events downtown after the groundhog makes his prediction. These usually last until sometime between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
